Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
One of my daughters would take the coin the other would take the FRN. They're as different as night and day. That's why one daughter has a safe full of silver and the other has an Ipod.

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
Great idea for a thread!
Some of my peers often brag about there new expensive clothing (ie. a new $ 200 jacket) I tell them to consider this... Take $ 200 and buy a 10oz bar (rounded for simplicity) then hang on to it for a year.. and sell..youve got your principle back plus any profit... then go down to value village and buy their jacket for $ 7.99 you can see the lightbulb come on... |

.....you don't have to be a bug to know that gold is frickin' valuable....

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
Well I had a chance to ask the "saver" daughter, which she'd take, she said "duh, the coin!". Good girl. I'm so proud. I asked the "Ipod" daughter and she answered, "which one is worth more?". Figures.

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
I think most would chose the "fifty bucks" (FRN). They know they can spend that at McDonald's or the movies or on some new rap CD, while most stores probably wouldn't accept the gold coin. And if they're each $50.....:bear_whistle: :bear_wacko:

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
No offense taken, I would probably say the same thing. Oddly enough both my kids watch very little television and are good students, but it's hard to break that "keeping up with jones" mentality when "all their friends" are swimming in "popular culture". And in case anybody wonders, I didn't buy the "Ipod daughter" the Ipod, she earned the money herself babysitting and that's how she chose to "waste" it. I have hope she'll come around eventually.

I just asked my high schooler...she said, "shiny!" Then I told her she made the right choice...and why. :clap2:

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
I don't know, a fifty with all zero's serial number could probably go for a lot of money.

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
I'm 43 and only got interested in metal about two years ago.
Just think of what I could have aquired if only I knew better. I bet I put pre-65's in gumball machines when I was younger! |
Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
My two younger sons ages 9 and 11, both chose the gold coin because "it's awesome", and "it's cool". They are not yet in high school, but they're on the right track.

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
Hell, it didn't sink into my dimly lit brain until I had lost most of my mercury filled teeth after two rounds of chemo therapy,:thinkey: that the pound refered to as the standard British currency denomination used to at one long ago time mean a pound of SILVER!

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
I recently got out of high school and I have no doubt in my mind that 99% of high school students would choose the $50 bill

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
I'm in my second year of college at UCLA (where people should be somewhat smart) and everyone would take the paper money. Somehow gold came up in a biology lecture last year and the professor asked what gold costed an ounce because he didn't know. The class seemed to think it was about $10 or so an ounce (it was about $600 at the time, silver was over $10) and he told them it was actually quite valuable - $3000-$5000 an ounce at current prices (give or take a little, he wasn't 100%). I wanted to correct him but it probably wasn't worth it. We also came to a consensus that silver was a dollar or two an ounce and platinum was either $20 or $10,000 an ounce depending on who you ask.
Also, an even better question would be chose one of the following: A. 1 $5 AGE B. 1 $10 APE C. 75 Morgan Dollars D. 70 ASEs E. 100 FRNs Something tells me 95% of Americans in general would take the 100 dollars. |
Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
Most people choose way too low on the price of gold. I showed a coworker a 1/2 oz 50 dollar Gold Kangeroo. She was flabergasted a coin that small could be worth 50 dollars! I really blew her away when I told her the actual price of it.

Re: Which Would The Average High School Student Choose?
Seems as though TPTB intentionally don't want this taught to the public school sheeple. Intentionally.
:thinkey: not the kid's fault |
